SANDERS: "Titanium" sold almost 4 million copies in the U.S. I was trying to be a pop songwriter not an artist. ![]() So I was really upset because I had just retired. And I never even knew it was going to happen. And then he took her vocal offer and put my vocal back on my demo vocal without asking and released it. But Guetta had other plans.įURLER: I wrote it for Alicia Keys. SANDERS: Sia thought someone else was going to sing it. It's called "Titanium." It's a collaboration with DJ David Guetta, and it was released in late 2011.įURLER: (Singing) You shoot me down, but I won't fall. SAM SANDERS, BYLINE: This is the song that really made Sia a star. SIA FURLER: (Singing) You shout it out, but I can't hear a word you say. #SIA I SHOUT IT OUT FULL#It's called "1000 Forms Of Fear." NPR's Sam Sanders visited Sia Kate Isobelle Furler - that's her full name - at her home in Los Angeles to talk about her music and her public image. A few years ago, though, Sia had a hit of her own, and today she's out with an album of her own. She's written hits for Beyonce, Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Rihanna. She's been writing songs for nearly 20 years, mostly for more famous singers. Sticks and stones break bones, Im bullet proof, I am titanium could be a way of telling the world they just cant touch you because youve overcome so much that now youre as strong and unbreakable as titanium. One artist embracing new challenges is Australian singer Sia. People talk and say things but the disassociation from the real world can in a way mute those trying to help. Trauma can create a brain fog directly after. The lyrics: talking loud, not saying much, cant hear a word you say. They fully break (the beginning treatment) then they explode with strength and blow away what has been chasing them for so long. Eventually it catches up with the kid and is a very chaotic and confronting moment as everything falls on the kid at once. The kid runs through many scary and unfamiliar places alone while still being chased. The kid accepts life has changed, throws away the teddy, the last of childhood innocence, grabs only what they need knowing theres no going back and busts through a very tough door. The kid then jumps on a bike and gets to their home, their safe place as quick as possible until the threat finds them there. The kid wanders for a bit, finds an exit and leaves feeling scared and exposed. At the start the kids sitting small and alone among tatters while the teacher looks scared and doesnt understand what the kid is feeling then she closes the door. I think it is showing the journey through experiencing trauma and the story shown is a metaphor. "Fire away fire away" not only is he no longer afraid he has begun to accept it. I actually think of the ending is much more sad than that.Because even though he may be bulletproof I think that he's only bulletproof because he's been beaten so much that he has built a resistance to the pain that once haunted him.įurther more "I'm talking loud not saying much" means that he has already been convinced that his opinion is not going to change anything. Since he has realized that he is no longer able to be hurt by their words, it becomes clear to him that he is in a way invincible.įrom a writer's standpoint I don't think that he's actually claiming some sort of supernatural power. ![]() That the voices that once tore him down can't hurt him anymore. ![]() He has realized now, probably growing older, that he has nothing more to fear. It's not that the narrator is saying he can't hear, he has become so used to the things said about him that he has grown numb to the insults and the pain. "You shout it out, but I can't hear a word you say" The whole theme through the song is that the person telling the story is done being cut down by people's words and actions. ![]()
